Coimbatore: Cyber crime police have started investigations after several people lost money from their bank accounts in Coimbatore on Thursday. As many as 20 account holders were shocked to know that money from their bank accounts was being debited without their knowledge, though the ATM cards were with them.
Police said that the incident came to light after several account holders in Singanallur area received SMS alerts on Wednesday that money from their accounts were being debited. Most of the victims had used their cards recently at ATM machine near Kamarajar road in Singanallur.
Police suspect the offenders have fixed skimmer device and a micro-cam to the ATM machine and hacked the secret pin numbers of account holders, who used the Kamarajar road ATM centre recently. All the debits were from Bengaluru.
The victims who lost their money handed over a petition to the police deputy commissioner (crime) P. Perumal for necessary action to get their money back.
A top police official told DC that despite sending circulars to all banks in the city that they deploy security guards at ATM centers, many have no security guards.
