HYDERABAD: Students from the Maulana Azad National Urdu University, Hyderabad have created ‘walls of democracy’ in support of Prof. Kancha Ilaiah. director of the Centre for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy at the university. Mr Tajamul Islam, a student, says, “We have decided to write Prof. Ilaiah’s quotes with chalk on these walls. They are located in five places across the campus.”
The ‘walls of democracy’ are huge blackboards pinned to walls by students to write messages, notices, election campaigns and others. “We did the same so as to not deface the walls and also to ensure that the authorities are not against our means of protest,” said Mr Rohith Jain, a student. The professor has come under attack from members of the Vysya community who feel that his book denegrates them.
Students have also decided to write messages supporting Rohingyas and demanding that the unlawful expulsion of their community should be stopped. “We have asked students to write messages welcoming Rohingyas into our country. It is a means of showing solidarity to oppressed minorities,” said Mr Tajamul Islam.
