Puducherry: Puducherry Lt Governor Kiran Bedi who is at the forefront of the ongoing 'war against dengue' in Puducherry, led a 7-kilometre walkathon to create awareness on dengue prevention measures on Saturday. Joined by more than 500 volunteers including school students, self-help groups, traders association members, NSS and NCC volunteers, the rally started from Raj Nivas at 6.15 am and passed through main thoroughfares and lanes in Puducherry.

The volunteers, including the Lt Governor,  were carrying placards stressing the importance and need of prevention of dengue mosquito generation. The rally was not only meant to urge people to eradicate mosquitoes and keep the city clean, but also to appeal for a smokeless and safe Deepavali celebration, said the Lt Governor. A Dengue Management Group formed by an apex group of secretaries for policy direction and coordination and implementation through departmental directors for internal coordination of every department for regular communication added the Lt Governor.

Each departments participant listed out department wise work being done and also what more was desired to improve matters and arrest the situation collectively. The regular follow up will be done by the district collector. Internal communication will remain ongoing through WhatsApp groups. Based on written feedback recorded, a manual will be made for each department to fulfil its respective responsibilities for present and for the future, said Ms Bedi.
