Burdened by debt, 3 of a family commit suicide in Tirupati

Police came to know about the incident late on Thursday when the neighbours rang up and informed them.

The incident came to light after the neighbours sensed a foul smell emanating from the house and informed the police.

TIRUPATI: Allegedly burdened by debt, a man, his wife and son hanged themselves to death  at their residence near BTR Colony, on Karakambadi Road, in Tirupati late on Thursday night. 

Police identified the man as Ponnathota Purushottam, 37, a contractual employee working the at TTD-run temple potu (kitchen). His wife was P. Padmavathi, 32, and 11-year-old son P. Manoj. The daughter of the couple, six-year-old P. Sirisha was spared as the knot on the rope by which she hanged herself got released at the last moment.  

Police came to know about the incident late on Thursday when the neighbours rang up and informed them. 

“According to preliminary investigation, the suicide was due to debts. The family from Anantapur district and was settled in Tirupati.
