Kochi: The Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) is taking its green initiative forward by tying up with a Kudumbashree unit to distribute lunch in steel carriers to its staff so that they no more avail food in plastic containers or wrappers.

It has also issued a direction to the staff bringing food from home to use re-usable tiffin carriers. “We’ve arranged 300 steel tiffin carriers in the Muttom stores depot,” said a metro spokesperson. “Employees can get their food from other vendors provided they take the containers back. They can also use biodegradable containers.”

The staff can give orders for lunch to the Kudumbashree unit of Choornikkara panchayat which distributes the same in steel boxes. “We’ve been given a special card to travel in metro trains for free. We’re getting nearly 300 orders daily,” said Radhika Lalel, a Kudumbashree member.

“The employees have responded well to the initiative,” KMRL managing director A.P.M. Muhammad Hanish said.

The KMRL is in the process of setting up more plastic recycling machines in the stations.
