Madras high court expresses anguish over poor quality of education in Tamil Nadu
If the students were permitted to write the examination without imparting education to them, the quality of education will go down.
Chennai: Expressing anguish over the poor quality of education imparted in our state, the Madras high court has said the quality of education should be taken seriously and those educational institutions which violate the Regulations should be dealt with firmly, otherwise our future generation will not excuse us.
Justice N.Kirubakaran made the observation while hearing a contempt petition filed by Association of Self Financing Arts and Science and Management Colleges.
When the contempt petition came up for hearing on Tuesday, R.Natarajan, counsel for the petitioner, submitted that when there is a specific stay order, how can the Bharathiyar Univeristy permit the study centres to admit students. They have clearly violated the order of the court, he added.
Gopinath, counsel for UGC, submitted that the UGC regulations prohibits running of distance education study centres outside the jurisdiction of the University. The Syndicate members have to apply their mind and pass orders, he added.
The judge said how can the university permit the study centres to admit the students in the middle of the academic year and also permit them to write the examination without conducting any classes?. If the students were permitted to write the examination without imparting education to them, the quality of education will go down. The action of the University was wrong. It had violated the UGC regulations. The university was spoiling the name of the great poet (Bharathiyar), the judge added.
The judge said, “Though we have more educational institutions, the standard is not good. Except, in one or two educational institutions, the quality of education in other institutions is poor. The quality of education should be good. If you permit admission in the middle of the year and also permit the students to write the examination without even attending the classes, then what kind of quality you will be providing to them. We are concerned with the quality of education. Whoever violates the Regulations, they should be dealt with firmly. You should take education seriously, otherwise our future generation will not excuse us”.
