Scuba divers spot ship sunken by cyclone Ockhi
Remains of the ship were found at Poonthura, 2.5 kms away from the land in Thiruvananthapuram.
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A group of scuba divers on Friday spotted a sunken ship, which is claimed to be the Iranian ship which went under water during the cyclone Ockhi in 2017 at Poonthura in Thiruvananthapuram.
Divers of Friends of Marine Life and Scuba Cochin found the remains of the ship at Poonthura, 2.5 kms away from the land.
Robert Panipillai of Friends of Marine Life, Thiruvananthapuram, said that they have been trying to spot the Iranian ship which got sank at Vizhinjam when the cyclone hit the Kerala shores.
“The owner of the ship along with a team tried to search for the ship in the Vizhinjam area but failed,” he said. “The ship reached Poonthura in the strong undercurrents. We clicked a few pictures of the ship but it was impossible to enter and explore the interiors due to ghost fishing nets,” said Mr Robert.
He said that there are rich fish species in the region because of the ship.
Mr Robert said the remains of the ship would provide an ideal ecosystem for marine life which will help the fisherman. “There are two more remains of sunken ships here and we are trying to get the pictures of one at Shangumugham,” he said.
