Chennai: Soon the residents of T. Nagar may have multi-purpose public toilets as the Greater Chennai Corporation has been mulling the installation of ATM centres in the facilities.

According to a Chennai Corporation official, there are nearly 200 public toilets of varied size and types functioning in and around T. Nagar. “Under area-based development (ABD) of smart city mission, all the toilets in the locality will be renovated and upgraded,” the official said.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that the civic body has been thinking of overhauling 39 public toilets in the area under the smart city. According to a Chennai Corporation proposal, all the 39 toilets would have ATM centres within the toilet compound.

“The toilets selected are conventional ones and some toilets will be upgraded to e-toilets as per the needs. We are in the process of getting inputs from local residents,” the official said. It is to be noted that the Tiruchirappalli Corporation had already installed an ATM centre in one of its public toilets and is in the process of installing such facilities in 16 more toilets.Apart from lending the space, the Chennai Corporation has also planned to allow the private advertisers to use the walls to display advertisements. “With revenue generated from the ATM centres and advertisements, we could maintain the toilets without spending money from corporation coffer,” the official added. The official also said that a detailed project report would be prepared to implement the plan.
