Three of a family drown in lake near Tambaram

The couple was working in quarry while they send their two sons to school.

Chennai: Three members of a family, including 13-year-old boy, drowned on Sunday in Puthangal Lake near Tambaram where they were fishing. The police identified the deceased as Dhanaraj, 45, his son, Prabhakaran, 13, a class VIII student, and his brother in law Muthuraja,27.

The victims were residents of Gandhi Nagar in West Tambaram. Dhanaraj and his wife Muthumari from Virudha Nagar had come to Chennai few years back looking for better opportunities. The couple was working in quarry while they send their two sons to school. Muthumari's brother Muthuraja too had joined them recently and was working in a construction site.

Sunday being a holiday for all, the three went for fishing. Quoting eye witnesses police said that whilefishing was going on, Muthuraja offered to teach his nephew swimming and both reportedly got stuck in mud in the lake. Seeing this, Dhanaraj, who ignored warning from others, too hurried to rescue the other two and got himself trapped in the muddy water. Three drowned and rescue teams could take out body of Dhanaraj by Sunday evening. Police said Prabhakaran was a student of a private school in Choolai.
