Waste woes still stand in Kochi

Kochi: With the sharp criticism of the National Green Tribunal against the Kochi Corporation for the failure in properly maintaining its Brahmapuram waste treatment plant, the demand for scientific garbage management is getting louder.
Though former chief secretary Jiji Thomson and Suchitwa Mission executive director K. Vasuki had proposed some unique steps for stench control and prevention of leachate into the river Kadambrayar, none of them could address the issue effectively.
A Mumbai-based firm was entrusted with the job of cleaning and deodorizing the garbage piles. Though the representatives of the firm claimed that they had managed to bring down the presence of flies and stench considerably, the situation has not improved much.
Authorities of Vadavukodu – Puthencruz where the plant is situated alleged that the stench and flies from the heaps of garbage have made the life of villagers miserable. “Despite tall claims, the situation has not improved. With the monsoon, the situation will worsen,” sources at the panchayat said.
Meanwhile, the most improper way of transporting waste from city areas to the dumping yard also has invited sharp criticism from various corners. On Monday, Thrikkakara municipal authorities and residents had to block the movement of garbage in open trucks after waste materials littered the roads.
Earlier, in 2012, the municipal authorities prevented garbage movement to the Brahmapuram plant following health hazards.
