Mangaluru: Seeing the heavy rain and the forecast of more to come, the district administrations of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada declared a holidays for schools on Friday and Saturday. With the South West Monsoon bringing good rain to almost all parts of the coastal districts since Thursday night, the water level roase in all the major rivers like Swarna, Seetha, Netravathi, Kumaradhara, leading to fears of a possible flood. In fact, at Uppinangady, the water level of the river was 24.5 meters, just four meters below the danger level. Disaster management teams were on standby near the all the rivers in the taluks and cities as a precaution. But besides some incidents of trees partially damaging houses, no major damage was reported in the two districts. Meanwhile, the Meteorological Centre's weather section director has written to the state Chief Secretary warning of heavy rainfall over Karnataka for the next five days.
