Chennai: Longest human chain stir against hydrocarbon project on June 12

The human chain protest will be held on June 12 evening and it will see the participation of DMK and its allies.

Chennai: Averring that the hydrocarbon project would be disastrous for Tamil Nadu, MDMK chief Vaiko said the DMK and allies join a massive human chain protest covering a distance of about 596 km demanding the Centre to drop the project.

“The human chain protest will be held on June 12 evening and it will see the participation of DMK and its allies. The MDMK will also take part,” Mr. Vaiko told reporters here on Saturday. He appealed to the members of the pubic, farmers and others having concern for farmers to participate in large numbers.

The Movement against Destruction along with farmers’ associations have proposed to organise the massive human chain against all ongoing and proposed hydrocarbon projects, as these pose a threat to the people of the entire Cauvery delta region. The human chain will commence at Marakanam in neighbouring Villupuram district and end at Rameswaram in Ramanathapuram district, traversing various districts.

The protest is also against the Central government’s Sagarmala project, establishment of petro chemical zone, atomic power projects, neutrino, Chennai Salem green corridor besides the Gail pipeline project.
