HYDERABAD: Work on the critical rail over bridge of the Metro Rail at Begumpet railway station has been completed using bridge builder technology. Hyderabad Metro Rail said the overbridge is a major connect on Corridor III from Nagole to Raidugram. As far as such bridges go, works at the Oliphanta Bridge is the only existing gap now. HMR officials are confident that they can complete it in a few weeks.

HMR managing director N.V.S. Reddy said completion of the two overbridges will make it feasible to complete work on Corridor 3 from Nagole to Mettuguda to Begumpet. The 450-foot Begumpet overbridge is located in a curve and wedged between the Begumpet flyover on one side and several buildings on the other.

Despite the curve, the overbridge was built using the bridge-builder method which facilitated erection and precise movement of the segments. The Indian Railways could give only a three-hour block, which was used for launching the segments, a total of 18 50-tonne segments. The overbridge was built in three parts and the main portion or span over the railway lines and station is 213 feet. Mr Reddy said utmost safety precautions had e been taken by a specialised bridge construction team of L&T  engineers.
