Scrap GST on sanitary napkins: Students
Students say state should take care of women's health.
KURNOOL: The women students of the Silver Jubilee Degree College demanded scrapping of GST on sanitary napkins. They said there was no rationale in imposing tax on hygiene essentials in a country like India, where people are just knowing about it. Quoting a study conducted by UNESCO, they said over 20 per cent students drop out of school in India after attaining puberty.
“Every month, girls drop out of schools in rural areas. The 12 per cent tax shows the hollowness of both the UPA and NDA governments’ promises. Menstruation is not a choice. When people talk about culture and tradition, menstruation is very much part of it. If the government is committed to the all-round development of women and girls, they have to take care of their health also,” said a student of Silver Jubilee Government Degree College.
Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister K.E. Krishna Murthy, on Saturday, inaugurated a women’s hostel at the college constructed at a cost of '80 lakh, which can accommodate 200 students. District collector S. Satyanarayana, Kurnool Range DIG G. Srinivas and others were also present.
