Kozhikode: Action against low quality coconut oil
Ayillyam and Surya oil brands banned in Kozhikode.
Kozhikode: The department of food safety will take action against the production, distribution and sale of Ayillyam and Surya brands of coconut oil which were banned in the district on July 4 for their low quality. The products are distributed without date of packing and maximum retail price, it was pointed out.
According to assistant food safety commissioner P.K. Aleyamma, the brands produced by the Balakumaran Company based in Tamil Nadu were banned after testing the samples collected in May, June and July. Earlier, the Surabhi and Soubagya brands of the company were banned.
She also warned traders against the sale and display of these products. Brands like Kokoso Coconut Oil, Malabar Tasty Coconut Oil, Kannur Coconut Oil and Kings Rolex Coconut Oil were also found to be of low quality. Penal action was being taken against them, the official said in a press release.
The illegal producers market the brands during Onam season. Ms Aleyamma also asked the consumers not to buy low-quality brands.
Coconut testa oil, oil from the protective outer covering of the seed and blended vegetable oil are also available in the market. The brown testa oil is the byproduct of desiccated coconut powder and virgin coconut oil. Though there are no health issues involved, it lacks the qualities of real coconut oil. There are many traders who sell this oil. In the blended vegetable oil there is 80 percent palm oil and 20 percent coconut oil. Using the picture of coconut in the cover, this oil has been sold as coconut oil, it is alleged. Those who buy oil for low price should clearly read the instructions at the cover.
If the public comes to know about the production and sale of any banned products, they can call 0495-2720744, 8943346191.
