Chennai: Ola driver sets wife on fire inside car, children manage to escape
As his wife battled the flames, she managed to break open the windows of the car and threw her children out.
Chennai: An Ola cab driver is accused of setting his wife ablaze inside a moving car on Sunday morning, while his shocked children watched the horrifying scene from the backseat. He has been arrested by the Chennai police.
The incident took place when the family of four was travelling in the car. Soon after, an argument broke out between 30-year-old Jayaram and his wife Prema, following which he pulled out a bottle of petrol and poured it on his wife.
The accused then allegedly set his wife on fire as his children watched the terrifying scene. Jayaram somehow managed to jump out of the burning car. As his wife battled the flames, she managed to break open the windows of the car and threw her children out.
After setting Prema on fire, Jayaram tried to cover up the incident terming it as a 'suicide.' He called for an ambulance and took his wife to the hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.
However, in a statement to the police before her death, Prema named her husband as the culprit. During investigation, police found out that Jayaram would often fight with Prema over money issues.
