Good rain recharges groundwater table in Nizamabad
Many defunct borwells start functioning now.
NIZAMABAD: Following the frequent rains, groundwater table has increased in Nizamabad district. In the wake of the above normal rainfall in the district for the last two months, the groundwater table has increased by an average of 3.08 mts in rural and urban areas. As a result, officials might be able to resolve the drinking water crisis at least temporarily. Due to scanty rainfall for the last two years, the groundwater table has fallen drastically in the district. In May, it dropped to an alarming 21.06 mt.
Last summer, agriculture pumpsets and drinking water submersible pumps have become defunct. People were forced to dig new borewells or fetch water from other places. People in Nizamabad, Kamareddy and Armoor towns faced acute water shortage so much so that people staying in rented houses even vacated the premises unable to face the shortage of water.
Municipal officials supplied drinking water through tankers to some places.
In rural areas too, people faced acute shortage of water. By Monday, the district received 602.6 mm rainfall as against a normal rainfall of 509.6 mm. The district recorded 18.3 mm excessive rainfall so far. As a result, the groundwater table has increased and borewells are functioning normally. V. Ramakrishna, a resident of Gangasthan-II in Nizamabad, said the borewell in their house which went defunct in summer is functioning now.
Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, groundwater department assistant director P. Srinivas Babu said borewells which went dry got recharged with good rainfall in the last few days. “The groundwater table will come to a safe zone if rains continue for the next two months,” he said. The district average groundwater table is still at a low level of 7.97 mt. It should rise up to 8-12 mt to meet the drinking water needs.
Meanwhile, Nizama-bad division has recorded 590 mm rainfall as against a normal of 455 mm, registering an excess of 30 mm. In Bodhan division, rainfall was recorded at 517 mm as against a normal of 440 mm, registering an excess of 15 per cent. Kamareddy division received a mere 422 mm rainfall. Groundwater table has dropped below 30 mts in Bhiknoor, Domakonda, Gandhari and other mandals in Kamareddy division, Nizamabad district.
