Bengaluru: Pay property tax or get garbage at your doorstep!
Intel had challenged the notice in the court, while the BBMP won the case after making legally valid submissions
BENGALURU: Pay property tax or get garbage dumped in your front yard! This was the warning given by the BBMP on Monday to Intel company, whose offices are located at Bellandur in Mahadevapura zone.
The BBMP, which has been cracking the whip against property tax defaulters, has won a few cases in the high court, including the one against Manyata Tech Park. The BBMP had argued before the high court that the company had wrongly declared the details of the property under the Self Assessment Scheme and was paying less tax.
Chairman of the BBMP Standing Committee on Taxation and Finance M. Shivaraju said that the company had defaulted on property tax payment since 2007-08 and that it owed Rs 34 crore to the BBMP. Repeated notices had not yielded any result, he said.
Intel had challenged the notice in the court, while the BBMP won the case after making legally valid submissions. The court directed the company to cough up Rs 17 crore within four weeks from the date of its order on July 25.
Revenue authorities, led by Mahadevapura Jont Commissioner Muni Veerappa, stationed three truckloads of garbage in front of the premises, threatening to unload them if the tax was not paid.
Company Director Jitendra Chadda assured the BBMP officials that they would comply with the court order and that they still had time to pay the property tax dues.
