Goud had invested crores in mining projects in Odisha and has huge debts. He thought he could gain the sympathy of his financiers through the drama, police officials said a day after they arrested five people in connection with the shooting. Goud planned the attack and paid Rs 5 lakh as advance to the suspects. He agreed to pay '50 lakh if the plan was successful. He took them to his home and made them survey the area.

Goud told shooter Raees Khan to fire three times as three was his lucky number. The plan was to fire at the right and left shoulders.
