Vishakhapatanam: Unknown persons have vandalised idols within Padmanabha Swamy Temple at Karakavalasa village in Jalumuru mandal of Srikakulam district.

Though it is suspected that the incident took place a few days ago, it came to light when the temple priest lodged a complaint with police on Sunday.

Police said some idols, including those of Saraswathi Devi and Lord Ganesh outside the temple, had been vandalised. Devotees mainly visit this temple atop a hill once a year during the Sankranti season. On other days, only the priest opens the temple for pujas.

Officials feel the vandals may not be burglars, as no valuables have been missing from the temple.

Srikakulam DSP M. Mahendra said they have received a complaint about idols being vandalised from the priest and committee members of the temple.

“We have registered a case. A notice had been issued to management of the temple for installing CCTV cameras in January. But they failed to do so. We are collecting clues to identify the accused, ‘’ Mahendra stated.
