Chennai: Genomic studies turning crucial factor in medicine

Chennai: Center for Genetics studies and Research (A Unit of The Madras Medical Mission) organized a two-day symposium on 'Genetics& Genomics in Cardiovascular Diseases at Madras Medical Mission (MMM) Hospital. 

The conference aimed at providing an insight about the role of genetics in cardiology. Dr. Bibhas Kar, Consultant and Head of the Department, Centre for Genetics Studies and Research, MMM said that clinicians often lack a basic understanding of genomic and the tools involved in generating genome based information, while its significant in all fields of medicine.

 Dr.Mullasari Ajit S, Director Cardiology, Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, MMM said, "Whilst maintaining a healthy diet and exercising are important for heart health, it is equally important to know the risks for developing a heart problem. They cause approximately 2.81 million deaths per year in India. Genetic testing can provide important information for diagnosing and treating such illnesses."
