Coonoor: The NCC unit of the Providence College for Women (PCW) here in the Coonoor hills, the first women’s college to have come up in the hills five decades ago,  will focus on e-waste management towards community service as well as conservation of the hills.

To start with, the NCC cadets of PCW along with the Coonoor chapter of the Junior Chamber of India organized an awareness program on e- waste (electronic waste) segregation in and around Cornwall Road, Sim’s Park, Alwarpet and Darlington Bridge here in Coonoor over the past two days.  The cadets visited each house and educated local citizens on the immediate and urgent need of e-waste management segregation and disposal. The cadets also insisted on cooperation with the local municipality to ensure a smooth and effective waste disposal system in Coonoor.

Along with the door-to-door campaign, NCC cadets along with JCI members, Fern Hill Middle School and Government ITI, Coonoor students organized a rally to create awareness on e-waste.

Ms. Cynthia George, NCC officer at PCW, stressed that it was the duty of students as future citizens of the country to ensure a clean India. She said that hill residents should understand that e-wastes are generated when electrical and electronic gadgets are disposed. Gadgets like outdated computers, printers, audio-video equipment and televisions are all considered e-waste when discarded.

“Everyone in the hills should lend support to this scheme to ensure that e-wastes are wisely managed and safely disposed in the hills to help the ecology of the fragile hills here.”  She said that the NCC girls will carry out this awareness programme in different parts of Coonoor town to rope in the support of residents for effective
e-waste management.
