Lokayukta to civic bodies: Fix the city lakes
The representative from the BDA also submitted that there is encroachment in all four lakes.
Bengaluru: Lokayukta Justice P. Vishwanatha Shetty has observed that the objective of civic agencies should be to solve the problems associated with lakes.
He said this while hearing of a petition filed by citizen group United Bengaluru on the status of city’s lakes and the failure of civic bodies in protecting them.
During the hearing, the BDA filed a status report and stated that in respect of one lake, a private litigant had obtained a decree while in respect of another, a DPR has been prepared.
The representative from the BDA also submitted that there is encroachment in all four lakes. The BBMP, however, failed to submit its report and its representative sought time to file the same.
The complaint filed on August 3 was based on findings from United Bengaluru's 27 lake visits and highlighted the issues of rampant encroachments, dumping of construction debris and discharge of untreated sewage and industrial effluents, which has led to the gradual disappearance of lakes.
