Women power: Exclusive parking on 85 CBD roads
Pilot project on Brigade Road gets good response.
Bengaluru: After a good response from parking reservation for women in Brigade road, the BBMP wants to implement the same in 85 roads, including malls, shopping complexes and other places. They have also received tenders and are awaiting council approval.
A senior BBMP officer said, “The public gave us a green signal and accepted the implementation, so we have decided to it across 85 roads. Parking reservation for women will also be available at Public Utility building, Garuda Mall, Rajajinagar RTO, K.R. Market, Jayanagar shopping complex, Yeshwanthapur BBMP complex, Russell Market, the yet to be inaugurated multi-level parking in Freedom Park and many more places. Wherever BBMP has a stake, the parking reservation will be implemented.”
City Mayor Sampath Raj said, “Tenders have been received for 85 places, which have been placed before the council. Once approved, we will commence the work. The idea of introducing the parking reservation for women is to ensure their safety. Usually, they do not get parking spaces in crowded areas and they used to park far away from their destination. Soon, women will have no problem to find parking space.”
The Mayor also added that they have been receiving calls from various states seeking suggestions to implement in their cities.
Multi-level parking at Freedom Park
The first phase of multi-level parking (MLP) facility at Freedom Park will be opened before 2018.
A source from BBMP said, “The first phase of MLP is nearing its completion stages and is expected to be open to the public any time soon in December, while the second phase will be thrown open in March, 2018.”
The mayor mentioned that the 23,000 sq mtr facility will be opened on December 1, “The work was already delayed due to various reasons but we picked up pace and nearing the completion. We are confident enough to open the second phase of MLP by March, 2018,” said the mayor.
“The first phase has the space to accommodate around 500 cars and 250 motorcycles. After the completion of second phase, more than 1,000 cars can be parked and this would reduce the traffic congestion in Gandhi Nagar and surrounding areas,” the Mayor added.
