Hyderabad: In yet another incident of a victim being attacked in public, a drunken brawl led to a man being stabbed on his neck on Saturday evening in Amberpet. According to the police, the men, who knew each other, were drunk and arguing about money.
Police identified the victim as Shahid, 26, a resident of the Zinda Talismath Factory area, and the attacker as Shaik Anwar, 45, of Akash Nagar. Police said they were daily wage labourers who often consumed alcohol in the evening.
Amberpet sub inspector (administration) S. Veeraiah said Shahid was unemployed and was borrowing from Anwar to buy liquor. At about 5 pm on Saturday, the two were drinking when Anwar asked for his money. Shahid began bad mouthing Anwar’s family. “Anwar picked up a broken beer bottle nearby and stabbed Shahid on the right side of his neck,” Mr Veeraiah said. Anwar fled from the spot and is absconding.
Locals called the police and shifted Shahid to the Osmania General Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment. A case was booked under IPC Section 307 (attempt to murder).
The series of such attacks in public started on September 14, when a man killed his son-in-law because he opposed his marriage. On September 19, a man attacked his daughter for marrying outside their caste. The girl survived with grievous injuries.
This was followed on September 26 by the axing of a 24-year-old man in full public view at Attapur by an assailant to avenge the murder of his son. On October 8, a man was hacked in broad daylight in Nagaram as revenge for another murder.
On Nov. 28, an autorickshaw driver was hacked to death in the Puranapul area of Mirchowk by a colleague while police personnel were seen standing nearby.
Psychiatrist Dr Diana Monteiro said violent incidents when people acted on impulse and when the emotional process gets overloaded. “They act without thinking and once the ‘rage’ episode is over, they realise what they did and even regret their actions,” she said.
