Kannur spreads wings despite ills

Kannur: The inaugural programmes of the Kannur International Airport will start at 6am on Sunday with a reception to the passengers of the first flight near Mattannur Cooperative Bank.
Officials will accompany them to the airport where industries minister E.P. Jayarajan will receive them at the passenger terminal by 6.30 am.
Mr Jayarajan will also unveil the Malabar handloom installation at the passenger terminal later. Minister for health K.K. Shailaja will inaugurate the foreign exchange counter. Revenue minister E. Chandrasekharan will inaugurate food and beverages stall.
Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan will receive a guard of honour from Central Industrial Security Forces at 9 15 am. He and Union civil aviation minister Suresh Prabhu will jointly inaugurate the airport by lighting the traditional lamp and later flag off the first flight, to Abu Dhabi.
The district administration has made elaborate arrangements for the inaugural function. The cultural programmes will begin at the main venue at 7.30 am.
There will be restrictions for private vehicles including bikes to the airport road on the day. Ninety buses will take the public to the venue and back for free from 6 am to 3 pm, to avoid traffic congestion.
