Salem: Van driver dies of heart attack at wheel, kids safe

SALEM: A school van driver suffered a cardiac arrest while driving and collapsed on his seat, but the children travelling by it had a providential escape with minor injuries and were promptly rescued and attended to by passersby. 

 According to police, Kandhasamy, 40, resident of Thevur near Sankagiri, working as van driver for a private school, was driving the kids to school as usual on Friday until he suddenly developed chest pain. 

As the van approached Vattarangadu, the van driver suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed at the wheel, leading to the vehicle running amok on the road. The van eventually hit a roadside drain and came to a halt, police said. Even as the van driver Kandhasamy died on the spot, local residents rescued the children who suffered minor injuries.
