IMD gives thunderstorm warning at isolated places over Tamil Nadu
The sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy, the department has said.
Chennai: Following days of intense heatwave conditions in the state, temperatures are expected to ease over most of Tamil Nadu bringing some respite especially to the interior districts.
The Indian Meteorological Department on Saturday predicted a thunderstorm accompanied with gusty winds and lightning at isolated places over Tamil Nadu, Kerala, South Interior Karnataka and Coastal Andhra Pradesh on March 9 and 10. The sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy, the department has said.
As the Easterlies strengthen and keep a firm check over the temperatures, temperatures have dropped with only Karur witnessing over 40-degree temperature on Saturday, said weather blogger Srikanth. “Extreme West Tamil Nadu & parts of South Tamil Nadu though will continue to see hot conditions with maximum temperatures staying above the 100ºF over many places today. While places like Madurai, Tirunelveli may not see immediate respite but heatwave conditions will reduce to some extent,” he said.
“With the easterlies strengthening, coastal areas stand to record light rains at some places, while the interior areas benefit from remnant moisture travelling across the land and developing into thunderstorms through convective heating. Places along the Western Ghats stand a chance for getting evening thunderstorms with one or two places likely to see moderate rains during the late night hours,” Srikanth wrote on Facebook.
Meanwhile, S. Ramachandran, an astro-meteorologist predicted rains in early April. “When it rains during elections, the voting percentage might take a hit” he added.
