Hyderabad: Professor M. Kodandaram, chairman of all-party Telangana Political Joint Action Committee has advised the Opposition to prepare a comprehensive action plan on Gulf workers’ welfare and demand the government implement the same.

He said workers from Asian countries were pillars for the economy of Gulf countries. “The governments should introduce an agency for the welfare of Gulf workers,” he said.

He said white-collar workers do not have any problem but blue-collar workers facing discrimination and language problems.

“Due to lack of skills, workers are becoming blue-collared and getting up to Rs 20,000. Of the Telangana youth, 83 per cent depend on self-employment, agriculture and casual works. So  they are heading to Gulf countries for better salaries.

The government should introduce skill development programmes through Technical Education departments and ITI insttutions. Such courses are available with private institutions. Telangana government should activate an NRI department and an agency to send workers to Gulf," he said.

Meanwhile, Marri Sashidhar Reddy demanded that the governments set up a database of Gulf workers.

“Registration of migrant labour will assist governments in welfare activities. In 1978, the then government took the initiative to introduce SETWIN for skill development,” Mr Sashidhar Reddy said.
