Chennai: Three persons were injured in a multiple collision of vehicles including one in which the state police chief was travelling in near Perungalatur on Thursday night. DGP T.K. Rajendran got down immediately from his official car and arranged an ambulance to ferry the injured civil engineers. They were triple-riding on a bike which had smashed against the top cop’s cat after colliding with a tractor.

Police said that the incident happened around 10.30 pm when the police chief was returning from Tamil Nadu police academy after a visit. He was going from the academy in Oonamancherry via Kolapkkam, Santhanapuram to reach GST Road in Perungalatur. The incident happened on the road connecting Santhanapuram and Perungalathur.

The injured were identified as Veniktesan (24), Senthil (24) of Thiruvotriyur and Shanmughavel (30) of Oorapakkam. “I just did what I should do as a citizen. It was an accident and I arranged for an ambulance,” Rajendran told this newspaper.

Chromepet police said that the bike riders were trying to overtake the police officer’s car when the mishap happened. “It appears they misjudged the speed and distance of the tractor–water tanker. The bike collided with the tractor and then hit the officer’s car.

The injured civil engineers were engaged in construction of a school in the same neighbourhood and the tractor-water tanker was taking water to the site,” police said. Police booked a case against Jayaseelan, the driver of the tractor.
