Kakinada: Many people in different villages of erstwhile East and West Godavari districts are facing drinking water scarcity.

Though the water is being released to canals from June 1, it is insufficient to cater for drinking water purposes also.

People of Pathakota mandal in K. Gangavaram mandal of Ramachandrapuram assembly constituency, which is represented by BC welfare minister Ch. Srinivasa Venugopala Krishna, have been facing shortage of drinking water for past three months.

There is an eight-acre drinking water pond in the area. RWS officials arranged for micro oven filters at a cost of ₹14 lakhs. People allege that this water is discoloured and unfit to drink.

In Undi constituency of West Godavari district, many drinking water ponds have gone dry. Drinking water scarcity is severe in Rajanagaram, Rajamahendravaram Urban, Rajamahendravaram Rural, Anaparthi, Kovvuru, Nidadavole and Gopalapuram constituencies.

Rajamahendravaram MP M. Bharat said 15 mobile water tankers have been purchased to supply drinking water to villages, where there is shortage. Two mobile tankers have been earmarked for each constituency. He said each mobile water tanker has a capacity of 4,000 litres. The tankers are making minimum 10 trips of water each day, supplying water to the villages.

RWS officials said once rains come, all drinking water reservoirs will be full and water scarcity will be resolved.
