Vijayawada: Seven Telugu Desam leaders were taken into preventive custody by the police when they tried to visit the Polavaram irrigation project without taking permission from the authorities concerned on Saturday.

A delegation of TD leaders comprising Devineni Uma Maheswara Rao, K.S. Jawahar, Nimmala Rama Naidu, Ganni Veeranjaneyulu, Badeti Radhakrishna, and others were proceeding to the Polavaram project site without prior permission from the water resources authorities and also without giving any intimation to the police.

Gopalapuram police stopped the TD leaders led by Nimmala Ramanayudu at Karagapadu and took them into preventive custody. Similarly, another team led by former minister Devi Uma Maheswara Rao was stopped near the entrance of the Polavaram project and taken into preventive custody.

Mild tension prevailed when the police tried to stop the TD leaders from proceeding to Polavaram as they raised slogans against the government for not allowing them to visit the project. The police advised them to get prior permission to visit the Polavaram project when they come next time.

Later, the police released all the TD leaders who were taken into preventive custody from the two police stations.
