Guntur: Women protest against liquor shops
Mahila Samakhya activists stage hunger strike for past 7 days.
Guntur: Women in large numbers staged dharna demanding shifting of a liquor shop from the residential area at Nutakki in Guntur district on Sunday.
A new liquor shop was opened in the residential area at the entrance of the gvillage causing inconvenience to the public, mainly women due to drunkard menace. The local women had taken the issue to notice of the officials several times but in vain. The protesting women alleged that women, girls and students are facing severe difficulties to walk on the road due to menace of drunkards.
They lamented that men of the village are spending their earnings on consumption of liquor and further harassing women for more money for liquor.
They further lamented that this is creating severe financial difficulties to women, and demanded shifting of the liquor shop from residential area and warned tointensify the agitation.
In another incident, women staged hunger fast seeking shifting of liquor shop from residential area at Suddapalli Donka in Guntur. CPI Guntur secretary J. Ajay Kumar alleged that the Telugu Desam government is trying to turn AP into Madyandhra Pradesh by turning public into drunkards with numerous liquor shops.
AP Mahila Samkhya secretary P. Durga Bhavani and other leaders said that women were staging hunger fast for the past seven days demanding to shift the liquor shop in vain.
They said that women will conduct a rally from Sankar Vilas centre to excise department office seeking to shift liquor shops from residential areas.
