Hyderabad: Tempers are flying at the Air Force Officers’ Housing Society, Vayupuri in Sainikpuri. Despite being made to pay sewerage cess, the area is not connected to the metropolitan sewage disposal network.

T.J. Reddy, the president of the colony’s committee says, “Residents are required to pay 30 per cent sewerage cess with the water bill. Yet we do not get the services of sewage disposal. Our colony has had a central sewage system since 1963 and we have 3 septic tanks. But with increasing number of residents, the tanks are overflowing. We have complained to water board and GHMC but to no avail.”

“The authorities say that we are from the cantonment area. Howe-ver, our colony comes under Malkajgiri, circle number 17. The cantonment area ends at AOC centre”, says Reddy.

The three septic tanks of the colony are placed on a green belt adjoining the colony. Reportedly, GHMC will soon be taking up some major road work.

Bala Krishnan, the secretary of the colony, says, “GHMC will be widening the road soon. The septic tanks would go then and we should be connected to the main sewage line. Currently, water sometimes overflows from our tanks to the southern zone at ECIL road which becomes a health hazard.”

“The sewage line of this area is over 50 years old. The area has a lot of old trees and the roots have grown into the water lines. We keep working on individual areas when water stagnation takes place but we cannot cut down any trees. Therefore, implementation will take time”, says a senior GHMC official.
