Alappuzha: Mass diarrhea due to Shigella bacteria

ALAPPUZHA: Shigella bacteria was the reason for the mass diarrhea cases reported amo-ng students of Govenment LP School, Eruva near Kayamkulam here the other day, said  officials.

According to officials, Shigella is contagious and a guideline has been issu-ed to the school authorities prevent future outbreaks. The presence of the bacteria was found in the lab test carried out by food safety department .  

As many as 90 students had sought medical assistance the other day following diarrhoea.  The public has been asked to drink boiled water and maintain hygiene.
