Kollam: Technical snags have shattered a Dalit girl's dreams of becoming a doctor. B.R. Binju, daughter of a cashew worker here, cleared NEET and was shortlisted for admission to the Parippally ESI Medical College under ESI labourers' quota.

But she is being denied it as her mother lacks the attendance fixed by the ESI Corporation as a norm because the factory had no sufficient working days.

Her poor parents had even taken a demand draft of Rs 24,000 to continue with the admission procedure, which the college authorities did not accept.

Her mother needed a minimum attendance of 78 working days in ten contribution periods of six months each, from April 1, 2012, to March 31, 2017.

The factory not even had a total of 78 working days in six months. “It is not practical in the seasonal industry of cashew. The Corporation will provide legal aid to such candidates,” S. Jayamohan, KSCDC chairman, said.
