Flights cancelled due to heavy rain in Kerala

According to sources, 16 flights on Chennai-Kochi and Kochi-Chennai routes were cancelled on Friday.

Chennai: Several flights from Chennai domestic airport were cancelled on Friday due to heavy rainfall and flash floods in Kerala.

According to sources, 16 flights on Chennai-Kochi and Kochi-Chennai routes were cancelled on Friday. Meanwhile, to board an Indigo flight to Kochi at 6.10 am, 79 passengers arrived. The passengers were made to wait for two hours before authorities announced the flight was cancelled.

Also, a Kerala-bound Malaysian airlines, carrying 237 passengers on board, departed from Kuala Lumpur and reached Kochi airbase in the wee hours of Friday. Unable to land the flight, the pilot alerted the Chennai Air Traffic Control to divert the flight to Chennai airport. The flight made landing at the Chennai airport at around 1. 30 am on Friday.

As per the Kochi airport website, the flight operations at international airport in Kerala have been shut till Sunday due to heavy rain the water level in Periyar river and a canal near the airport has been rising.
