KSEB assistant engineer drowns

Though the two workers swam nearly half-a-km to safety, Baiju drowned due to fatigue.

Thrissur: A KSEB assistant engineer drowned at Punnayur-kulam in Chavakkad taluk here on Friday as the country boat in which he was travelling along with two workers capsized in a water-lo-gged paddy field. He was identified as K.A. Baiju, 44, of Vadanappally Baiju was staying at Moorkanikkara.

The KSEB team was going to repair a tower in the paddy field, which had collapsed a few days ago, when the accident happened.

Though the two workers swam nearly half-a-km to safety, Baiju drowned due to fatigue.

Some workers from Alappuzha who were engaged in restoring the tower rushed the AE to the nearest hospital, but his life could not be saved. Baiju was in charge of the 110 KV sub-station at Viyyur.

He is survived by wife Ambily and daughter Anupama, 12.

 His colleagues said that though he was a good swimmer, due to continuous work in the past few days he was tired and could not make it.

The local people said that there were strong undercurrent in the water-logged paddy filed.
