Kerala: Girl who set herself ablaze after professor rebuked her, dies

Kottayam: A teenaged girl student who attempted self-immolation last week after being allegedly rebuked by her school principal died at a hospital in Kottayam on Saturday, police said.

Based on a statement given earlier by the girl at the hospital in the presence of a magistrate, a case had been registered against the school principal, police said.

The 17-year-old girl studying in a government vocational higher secondary school in Muvattupuzha died at the Government Medical College Hospital in Kottayam early this morning.

She had set herself on fire at her residence and was admitted to the hospital with 70 per cent burns.

Soon after admission, she gave a statement to the police in the presence of a Magistrate, police said.

Her parents had alleged that the girl had taken the extreme step after she was scolded by her school principal over a note found in her bag.
