Rainfall normal across Telangana, yet groundwater level dips
In August 2015, the average groundwater level in TS was 12.32 meter below ground level (mbgl), while it is 12.47mbgl this year.
Hyderabad: Well into the monsoon season, there has been no improvement in the average groundwater level across the state. In fact, the level has seen a dip. In August 2015, the average groundwater level in TS was 12.32 meter below ground level (mbgl), while it is 12.47mbgl this year.
This is in spite of the fact that all districts except Medak have received normal rainfall till now this year. One of the main reasons being attributed to the dip in groundwater level is the staggered pattern of rainfall.
In August, most of the rainfall occurred towards end of month and was not constant across the month resulting in less rainy days hence giving less time for groundwater levels to get recharged.
Groundwater level in 233 of the 464 mandals in TS dipped in August this year as compared to last year. As many as 87 mandals recorded groundwater at deep water levels, that is, at over 20mbgl.
In Hyderabad, Ameerpet and Marredpally mandals recorded the deepest groundwater levels at 18.70mbgl and 16.20mbgl respectively, an improvement from last August when it was 18.95mbgl and 26.80mbgl respectively.
