School students join anti-Neet protest in Chennai

The students raised slogans against Neet and refused to move away despite requests from the police.

Chennai: Students of government schools in the city took to the streets at two locations on Saturday protesting against Neet giving the city cops a headache. After an ordeal of four hours, which involved a lot of pacifying by the police officials, the students dispersed. Later in the day, city police arrested three-college students Vignesh (20) of Koyambedu, Manickam (20) of Perambur, Arun (20) on charges of instigating the school students.

More than 30 students from the Government Girls Higher Secondary School in Mahalingapuram gathered on  Nungambakkam road, leaving their classrooms in full uniform. The students raised slogans against Neet and refused to move away despite requests from the police. Soon, members of the public and parents of few students to joined the protest. Traffic was diverted from the stretch, police said.  

Later in the day, students of a corporation school thronged the streets near Perambur bridge. Additional Commissioner HM Jayaram rushed to the scene and held talks with the students and made them disperse from the road.

Since the death of medical aspirant Anitha last Friday, protests have erupted across the state everyday with members of the Students Federation of India (SFI) managing to sit on a protest at former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa’s memorial at the Marina beach.
