Tamil Nadu: Tahsildar directed to remove encroachments immediately

Crops and plants raised in the land were also destroyed.

Chennai: The Madras High Court has directed the tahsildar, Villupuram district to remove encroachment in the water source in Keelpennaiyaaru water division immediately.

The Division Bench comprising Justices M. Sathyanarayanan and N. Seshasayee, before which a  petition from A. Natarajan, a headmaster in a Government Middle School, Thirupachanoor village, Villupuram district, came up for hearing, has directed tahsildar, to remove the encroachments in the water canal and directed him to forward necessary particulars to executive engineer, PWD of Keelpennaiyaaru water division. 

According to petitioner because of the encroachments in the Keelpennaiyaaru waterway during the rainy season agricultural land in the area was affected. Crops and plants raised in the land were also destroyed. Several representations were made to the Villupuram district collector, who forwarded them to EE. However, there was no action from tahsildar.

The Division Bench directed the authorities to initiate appropriate action under the provisions of Tamil Nadu Protection of Tank and eviction of encroachment Act 2007 to protect the canal expeditiously after the removal of encroachments in six weeks.
