First flood warning issued at Prakasam barrage
People living in low-lying areas are also advised to move to safe places
Vijayawada: Water resources authorities issued the first flood warning when the discharge in Krishna river at Prakasam barrage crossed 3.97 lakh cusecs downstream into the sea at 7.30 am on Friday.
As further raise in the water level at the barrage expected, the authorities arranged extra watchers and directed the flood duty officers to be on guard all along the river course upstream and downstream at the barrage.
With huge quantum of floodwater being discharged from the barrage downstream, Vijayawada city police commissioner Kanthi Rana Tata issued directions to all the police stations concerned to alert the people in flood-affected areas and also in hilly areas for rock falls to avoid any untoward incidents. People living in low-lying areas are also advised to move to safe places.
Meanwhile, as the water level continues to raise, the water resources authorities discharged 4.32 lakh cusecs of water from the barrage into the sea and also to canals by lifting all 70 gates at the barrage at 9 pm.
