Thiruvananthapuram: The transwoman, who stood as AISF general secretary candidate at AJ College of Science and Technology, Thonnakkal, lost the college union elections. But that doesn’t take away the fact that Nadira Mahrin has become part of electoral history. This was the first time that a transwoman entered the fray in college union elections in the state.

Nadira understands the significance. “I am not disappointed at losing. I consider it my great good fortune that I could contest in the elections. I want to do a lot more for society, and will not stop at this,” she says.

Earlier, when DC spoke to her before the elections, she was confident that her activities in the previous year as a magazine editorial board member will get her votes. She had also said that the students will vote for her because she did not just represent the 1200 students in her college, but the transgender community and the cause of gender minorities.

She secured 239 votes this year. “The fact that I got so many votes, when the seat was won by someone with 280 votes shows how well the student community has supported me. This is because they have understood my capabilities,” she says.
