Students and activists of various student organisations hold protests on the campus of Nehru College of Engineering & Research Centre at Pampady on Monday.

Thrissur: A timely move by the Thiruvilwamala Grama Panchayat Members and SFI activists on Tuesday afternoon made Nehru College officials to retreat from their decision to close down the women's hostel on the campus on a short notice even while there were several students having university examinations on Wednesday.

"The students of the girls' hostel were told by the hostel authorities to vacate the hostel regardless of university exams on Tuesday afternoon and they intimated us. SFI workers along with members of the grama panchayth went to the college and the women member of the local body held discussion with the college authorities and presented the difficulty of girls who come from far off distances if they have to leave the hostels with examination on the next day. Fearing our protest and that of the local people, the college took back the decision to suddenly shut down the hostel," Area Secretary of SFI Sarath Chandran K, said.
