Bengaluru: The long awaited suburban railway project got a thumbs up from the cabinet on Thursday with the big ticket Rs 23,000 odd crore venture set to cover four corridors, linking satellite towns around Bengaluru, to the city.
The cabinet approved commencement of a feasibility study and report for the project with the Union and state governments set to chip in 20 per cent each while the remaining 40 per cent of the cost would be raised through loans and market borrowings, according to Co-operation minister Bandeppa Kashempur.
He told the media soon after a meeting of the cabinet that the suburban railway project would provide an alternative approach to the city from places such as Nelamangala, Rajanakunte, Whitefield, Kengeri, Heelalige and other places.
The minister said the cabinet also approved a modified alignment of the proposed Metro link to Kempegowda International Airport from Nagavara in an effort to decongest traffic from the city to the airport. The new alignment will push costs up from Rs 5, 958 crores to Rs 10, 584 crores.
