SCMS students get tips on self-defence, confidence
Workshop makes girls feel safe.
Kochi: The initiative could not have been launched on a better occasion. The SCMS at Kalamassery here embarked on a woman self-defence awareness programme coinciding with International Women’s Day on Tuesday so as to make girls feel secure and confront hostile situations with confidence.
Trainers imparted tips to students on the campus. “Though our women have a natural strength to overcome adversities, they are not often consciously aware of it,” said Bless Philip, a national karate trainer and motivational speaker, while delivering a lecture cum demonstration on women's self-defence.
“Confidence is critical, taking a risk is like taking a chance, do not give off a vibe that you are scared, make sure you understand your surroundings even if you are staying or moving alone, do not reveal that to others and if someone eve-teases you when you are absolutely alone, try keeping calm and ignore them. Let people know what is happening to you,” he told the students who gathered to learn lessons in self-defence.
Lakshmi Prakash, a PGDM student, said that the workshop was very useful. “Not all of us are aware of the ways to escape difficult situations. The trainer gave us tips about using the things that we normally carry like bags and umbrellas, for prudent use on such occasions apart from turning the situation in our favour without losing confidence,” she said.
