Hadiya thanks Supreme Court, PFI for freedom
NIA investigation against Shefin Jehan still on.
KOZHIKODE: "With the Supreme Court recognising our marriage now, I am enjoying my freedom," Hadiya said on her first visit to the state on Saturday, along with her husband Shefin Jahan, after its verdict. Mr Jahan went to her college near Selam in Tamil Nadu after the Supreme Court verdict and brought her here on a three-day leave. The visit was to meet E. Abubacker, the chairman of Popular Front of India.
Addressing media at the PFI office here, Ms Hadiya also expressed her gratitude to the organisation for all their support for her conversion while other Muslim groups turned their back. "Choice to religion is a fundamental right enshrined in the Constitution. But when I embraced Islam even religious organisations refused to help," she said. "Some of them even pointed the finger at those who helped me. Many others were enjoying the game from outside." She said the PFI extended all support including legal aid that ensured her freedom.
"That's why I am here in person to express my gratitude," she said. Mr Jehan said the NIA's investigation against him is still on. "We are very much tired. We want to meet other family members," he said. The couple offered to reveal more details at another a press conference on Monday. Their marriage was annulled by the Kerala High Court last May which the Supreme Court struck down this week.
