'Laadli Media Awards' for 2 Deccan Chronicle journalists

The award series was launched in 2007 to promote sensitivity in media to build a gender-just society.

The Laadli Media Awards are given away by Population First, a Mumbai-based non-profit organisation and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in association with Colors Viacom 18.

Hyderabad: Two Deccan Chronicle journalists won the Laadli Media Awards for Gender Sensitivity 2015-16 (its 8th edition) for their stories published in these columns.

Senior reporter K.K. Abdul Rahoof bagged the ‘best news report’ under the print category award for his report titled ‘Telangana women cops face bias’. The report had exposed the widespread misogyny in the Telangana police department.

Senior reporter H. Kamalapathi Rao won the ‘best special story’ under the print category award for his reports titled, ‘College girls sell their eggs’ and ‘Surrogacy on the rise in tribal areas’. The reports exposed the exploitation of young students and tribal women from poor families in the surrogacy market. The stories were selected from 282 entries by a 20-member jury.
