Rainwater harvesting work taken up by Chennai corporation last year at Mangal lake near Mogappair - Vaavin has yielded results and the water body is now helping local residents with recharged groundwater.

Based on the success, civic authorities are now deepening the lake and an architect is appointed to develop the park in to an eco-lake with play area for children, solar lights and a one kilometer jogging track.

Explaining the eco project, a senior corporation official attached to Ambattur zone said the sprawling lake now has water to three foot despite the drought conditions as the storm water from adjacent areas are drained in to the water body through inlets. The park will have a dedicated place for women to do ground exercises and park will also have an open gym equipped with yoga stage.

Fifty solar lamps are to come up in the park and the project which started in 2016 February at an estimate of Rs 80 lakh will be completed within this year.

On daily basis more than 500 walkers use the park and this will attract more footfalls after the architect and landscaping is done, the official said adding that the water body in the park will be deepened by another three foot to hold more storm water, the official added.
